Grant Park Neighborhood
The Atlanta Dwell house is
in a neighborhood called Grant Park.
Grant Park is the largest of the In-town neighborhoods in Atlanta. Grant Park
has been experiencing gentrification for the past 20 years. Gentrification is the process in which middle
class and upper class individuals and families have moved back into a lower
income neighborhood and renovated historic homes.
Many of the neighborhoods experiencing gentrification
in Atlanta were abandoned by whites in the 1960’s as blacks
began to move into the neighborhoods.
The process of gentrification has displaced many of the low income
residents who cannot afford to pay increased property taxes or keep their homes
up to the new “historical district” standards.
On the other hand, gentrification has brought in a lot of new
businesses, restaurants, and other development.
There has also been revitalization in the public schools, as well as the
addition of two new charter schools.
(The neighborhood charter school is right across the street from the
Dwell House).
