Atlanta weather can be hot and humid or rainy. Be prepared to drink lots of water and to protect yourself from the sun. Jackets during the summer are not necessary unless for protection from the rain. Dress will always be casual - shorts/jeans and T-shirts being standard (unless attending a Sunday worship service.) Work clothes will be subject to wear, tear and possible stains. Many of the agencies that DOOR works with do require that all volunteers wear long pants. Pack with this in mind. It’s a good idea to mark your clothes with your name. The following is a suggested list.
- Full Length, Long pants. Many of our agencies require long pants. Please bring at least two pairs. Some agencies allow Capri pants, but you should not count on this when packing.
- Shorts that come past your fingertips when arms are held straight at your side. You should not bring any shorts or skirts that are shorter than this.
- Closed toe shoes. Most of our agencies require closed toe shoes. Sturdy tennis shoes will do, but thongs or open shoes are not allowed at many of our agencies. You may bring flip flops or sandals for recreation time or while you are at our host church.
- Shirts that expose the shoulders may not be worn. Atlanta is a conservative city. Please do not bring tank tops, halter tops or muscle shirts.
- Old shirts, shorts, pants and shoes. Clothes may get dirty, painted, or stained at work sites. Please pack clothes you don’t mind getting dirty to wear at your work sites.
- Casual clothes. Often folks want to change when they get back from their work sites. Bring some casual clothes for free time and evening activities and reflection.
- Church clothes (for our weekend groups who are worshiping in a local church on Sunday morning) - Most ethnic churches do not dress casually for worship. Please bring appropriate Sunday clothes if you are planning to attend services while in Atlanta.
- Socks and underwear as appropriate
- Sleeping apparel suitable for co-ed areas.
- Sleeping bag and pillow – Please do not bring air mattresses. We have enough mattresses or cots for everyone. There is not room in our host church for air mattresses.
- Sunscreen and Insect Repellant
- Towel
- Toiletries. Soap, Shampoo, Toothpaste, Toothbrush, etc.
- Bible
* DOOR is not responsible for loss or theft of any belongings, so please be smart and plan accordingly.
- Anything that is not replaceable or has significant value, like expensive jewelry.
- Drugs, alcohol, firecrackers, knives, guns, weapons of any kind, etc.
- A lot of money. (DOOR Atlanta t-shirts and water bottles are available for $10-$20.)
- Too Much Stuff.
- There is not a lot of storage room at the church. All of your belongings must fit at the foot of your cot-sized mattress.
- Air Mattresses. We have enough mats and cots for everyone.
