Dwell in Miami

DOOR Miami is looking for young adults to participate in a community dedicated to service, education and spiritual disciplines in Miami while serving the community through agencies and local ministries.

Miami’s Dwell program takes 4 forms

Miami Dwell is for those who are:

General Info

DWELL will connect candidates to Miami, to serve the community, to learn from others already serving in ministry, to assist the ministries of the local church and social service network, and in the process form communities of young adults across the city, who are dedicated to growing as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Candidates will be interviewed and placed with Miami agencies and ministries based on the need of the local ministry and the gifts and talents of the candidate. After arriving Sept. 1, the first two weeks are set aside for orientation, tours, reading, settling in. Interns will serve in their ministry placement an average of 32 hours a week. They will meet together as a team one day a week for directed study, prayer, training, or living issues. Twice a month they will meet together with the other teams serving in Miami for worship and fellowship. They will learn about and better understand the extreme diversity of Miami while meeting and working with a variety of people and ministries. Four retreats are taken in September November, April and August.

The program has four major components:

SERVICE - To the ministry placement, to the other interns, to the neighbors.

COMMUNITY - Dwell participants will live in a common household with 4-6 other young adults, relate to other volunteer intern houses, worship with local young adults and churches, relate to the neighborhood and the surrounding area.

RELATIONAL IMPACT - Relationships will be developed with people from the community in which they live. Dwell participants will experience the joys and difficulties of cross-cultural friendships. They will observe and experience how lives are transformed through relationships.

SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES - Volunteers will experience regular group Bible study, worship, and guided reflection. Each volunteer with be matched to a local pastor as a personal mentor and friend. Volunteers will explore the discipline of simplicity.

Goals

To raise up Christian urban ministers to find solutions to problems plaguing our country and our churches. To dwell amongst the people of Miami as Christ's example of living among us. To make known and to know God's presence in the city of Miami by connecting to the community and being a part of an urban renewal movement. To meet a critical need of the local churches.

Benefits

DOOR will provide housing, utilities, groceries, public transportation pass, retreats throughout the year, a monthly stipend and health insurance. Upon completion of service volunteers are eligible for grants for partial payments of student loans and moving expenses. Volunteers will be expected to raise support of $6500, and to communicate their experience to their home church and supporting networks.

Period of Service

One year (August 26, 2008 to August 15, 2009)
